Debt Help - Ask For It!

Let's be honest with each other. There is a certain stigma attached to debt in today is society. Whether it is a mortgage or a range of different credit cards, once you loose control of your finances you are deemed "irresponsible" or a "reckless spender". This, of course, is usually the opinion of people who have never had to stretch their resources to the limit just to pay the bills and eat a square meal once a day. It can be quite hard when even friends and family do not understand what you are going through, even if they do their best to help. There are, however, other places you can turn. There is a range of different debt help companies who can help you manage and clear your debt who you can find in your phone book or even with a quick search on Google.

Debt Help Professionals

Debt help professionals are trained to look at your finances and identify the ways you can reduce your debt most effectively. They will usually do this by recommending debt consolidation, or a change in your spending habits, or often both. Debt consolidation is when you take out a loan from one lender to pay off all your debt and then you only have to worry about making one payment once a month, rather than several payments at different times. These loans can either be unsecured, such as a personal loan, or secured, such as a mortgage. You may feel obligated to cut up your credit cards if you get the stage of being this far in debt but you should ask yourself, is it really the most constructive solution? Of course, it may be a short term fix if you're an over spender, but it may be much more valuable to learn how to use credit cards responsibly.

Debt Collection

This is probably one of the scariest parts about being in debt. If it gets to a stage when your lender has called on a debt collection agency, you need to keep a clear head and address the problem. If you face debt collection, do not get upset at the collector and do not try to bargain with them - it is easy to forget in the heat of the moment but it is nothing personal, they are just doing their job. There are very specific rules debt collectors must follow in contacting you. For example, there are very specific hours they are allowed to contact you - not before 8am and not after 9pm. If they are told, orally or in writing, that they may not contact you at work, they may not. If you have gone to a professional agency to help you with your debt, or if you have an attorney, the debt collection agency should contact them on your behalf. It is important to talk to debt collectors even if you don't believe you owe anyone money because if you don't do your best to co-operate with them, they have every right to take you to court on their client's behalf.

Credit Debt

When people first start going into debt, a common response is to get a credit card to keep up with other payments! In the beginning this seems quite easy because they often still have a clear credit rating and are able to be approved for cards easily. However, this is no way to live. Making minimum payments on several cards every month is no way to spend, no way to save and no way to live. Spending large amounts of money you don't have is one of the easiest ways to fall into serious debt. Credit debt is not the end of the world though. Review your cards and what you're spending them on. If it's things you can't cut back, such as rent, power, or an already meagre food budget, you may have to think bigger than your card. Is your current living situation simply too much rent? Do you leave the heater on all day? Can you take public transport more often to cut back on fuel costs? Going into serious debt with credit cards can have a real impact on your lifestyle - if you are refused credit cards, suddenly the world of plastic money is a lot harder to navigate.

Bad Debt Credit Card

Some institutions have cards targeted specifically at people whose credit ratings prevent them from getting a regular credit card. Banks are very aware that people who are being refused credit cards are often willing to pay fees and charges much higher than usual for the opportunity of being awarded a card. However, if you do choose to take out a bad debt credit card and you manage it well, it can be a fantastic tool to improve your credit rating. It can be hard when you're struggling just to make rent, pay bills and keep food on the table, but key to your success is managing your money according to your income - not according to your limits.
